I have been a part of book clubs off and on during my adult life, until I became a mom. I used to be able to read an entire book in a day, but now I’m lucky if I read something more than Saundra Boyton. My desire to read and discuss a good book didn’t change after having kids, I just found that in order for me to read, it would either take three months to read one book, or I would have to sacrifice sleep, family time, or some other aspect of my life.
I was lucky one night to visit with some other amazing moms and the subject of books came up. We all had a deep love for books and we all lamented that as much fun as a book club would be, we would have to choose between reading the book and being a mom.
It’s true, as a mom, we give up so much of ourselves. Does it really have to be this way?
I left thinking of how we could have a book club but have it accommodated the schedule of everyone and their schedules. I pondered how to facilitate it via social media, wondering how to make the most of it without spoiling books for those reading at a different pace/ schedule.
I wish I could do something as cool as this company, and mail out books with awesome things, but who’s got money for that? Not me.
Anyway, after reading several great books recently, only to realize I have no one to discuss them with, I realized I wanted to add a book club component to my blog. I want to start with a disclaimer that I am horrible at finishing things or even sticking with things I start and I’m hoping this won’t be one of those things. BUT if I get the responses and feedback that I’m hoping to get from my awesome readers (a.k.a. the Crusters) I will remain motivated to stay on top of it.
How it will work:
Each month on my Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages I will announce the book for the month. I’m thinking I may play around with live videos as well as just posts on the page (if you’re not following me on social media, you’re missing out!).
As I read the book, I will post videos/comments/questions about the book. I will alert people where I am at in the book before I post so I don’t give away anything. Then, you, as a member of the Crusty Club can comment about your thoughts/views/ideas on that part of the book and participate in the discussion. It’s awesome because this way it can be done on your time and on your terms. You don’t even have to keep up with the current books.
I could just pick every book we read, but I feel like that completely defeats the purpose of the club. Here’s the club aspect: I want YOUR suggestions for books we read. It can be fiction, non-fiction, whatever, as long as it’s reasonable in length (please don’t pick Gone With the Wind, or War and Peace as an option.) Books should be relatively clean (i.e. minimal to zero swearing, no sex scenes, etc). Email me your ideas at: firstname.lastname@example.org . Include why you want to read this book. You can include some discussion topics/ideas/questions if you want. After your book is picked, you will have the option of leading the discussion if you want, sharing your views etc. on my Facebook page and on my blog.
I look forward to hearing all those awesome book suggestions from you.
